Derek Mason

Derek Mason CEng PrEng MSc(Eng) MSAICE MICE FIStructE is a Chartered Structural Engineer with over 40 years’ experience in the field of structural engineering. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers, which is the highest Membership level and is only achieved by a very small percentage of Members. He is also a registered Professional Engineer in South Africa and has worked on projects of various sizes and complexity in various parts of Africa and has worked in the UK since 1998.
Derek has worked for a broad range of engineering consultants in South Africa and the UK, with consultants in the UK such as Watermans, Capita Symonds as well as smaller niche consultants such as Jan Bobrowski & Partners and NRM Consultants. It was while at Jan Bobrowski & Partners and NRM Bobrowski that Derek worked on a broad range of sports and leisure projects including football stands and racecourse stands. NRM Bobrowski was sold to Capita Symonds in 2008, and it is while working at these firms where Derek was involved with the London 2012 Olympic Stadium.
Derek has had a passion for athletics, particularly the middle distances, from his secondary school days where he competed and set several records in the middle distances. He then moved to road races including half marathons and then onto the full marathon. Derek has completed more than 100 full marathons, as well as 13 number 35-mile ultra-marathons in a running career spanning over 40 years. It was therefore a dream come true for Derek to become involved with the London 2012 Olympic Stadium.
Derek led the team that did the third-party check for the Structural Engineering and Technical Review of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, working for the Olympic delivery authority (ODA). This covered both the structural engineering design checks as well as the on-site checking of the construction.
Derek is the founding Director of the multi-award-winning niche structural engineering consultancy, Super Structures Associates Limited. Derek has also been a consultant to Sky News on the collapse of a large crane into the Sao Paulo’s Corinthians Arena in Brazil in November 2013, while it was being built for the FIFA Football World cup held in June 2014. Derek has also been featured on the BBC and on podcasts.
